Hey Kid Mag
Hey Kid Mag is a brand that was developed to help high school students explore the idea of being a full-time artist. After extensive research, discussions with fellow artists, and brainstorming about the most effective resources, I decided to create a zine-workbook and social media page to inspire and educate the next generation of artists.
The Idea:
Originally, I asked, “What would it look like to share a day in the life of an artist in Athens?” This prompted more questions relating to how I wanted to frame my thesis. I determined that my mian project question would be: “How can design help high school students explore the idea of being a full-time artist?”
Research:
Throughout my research, a need for tangible information about this career field was evident. Helpful tips and opportunities about becoming a full-time artist are not readily available for teachers or students. Considering this need, my goal for this project quickly turned into an advocating effort for students to follow their passions and to empower them to make careers out of what is often perceived as “just a hobby.”
Development:
With this in mind, I developed a brand identity, as well as content and materials for the career guide, covering topics such as art careers, collaboration and mentors, tips on being an artist, how to write an artist statement, and ways to sell & ship your artwork.
The Brand:
The title ‘Hey Kid Mag’ was chosen with a purposeful intent that encompasses multiple layers of meaning and aligns with the core values of the publication. The term ‘Hey Kid’ carries a friendly and approachable tone, inviting young individuals to engage with the magazine’s content. The choice of wording and tone reflect a belief in nurturing creativity from a young age and providing avenues for self-expression that are constructive and fulfilling.
The intentional overlap of ‘Mag’ not only relates to ‘magazine’ as a printed material but also subtly references the part of a firearm that holds ammunition. This juxtaposition serves as a powerful symbol, encouraging artists and readers to channel their creative energy positively, emphasizing the transformative potential of art as a weapon for constructive outlets, fostering a culture of expression and innovation while steering away from negative outlets.
By choosing this title and brand concept, I aspire to motivate a generation of artists who equip themselves with creativity, passion, and resilience, promoting a community built on collaboration, innovation, and positivity.
The Product:
After developing my idea, it was time to bring it fully to life. To do so, I Riso printed, hand cut, folded, and staple bound 100 copies of the zine. With the finished product in hand, I was able to share it with local art teachers and create promotional elements for social media.
